Student Life
The city of
Pittsburgh is our campus!
Pittsburgh has become a national hub for biotechnology and medical research, with the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) offering some of the best medical and research facilities in the world. This environment provides students with opportunities to participate in a wealth of learning experiences and events involving internationally recognized experts.
- The city has been rated as one of the nation’s metropolitan areas with the lowest cost of living.
- The population is diverse; people from around the world live, study and work here.
- Pittsburgh is a city with a smaller town atmosphere; crime rates are low, many neighborhoods are safe for families, people are friendly.
- Cultural, art, music, professional sports and educational venues abound.
- Student life on Pitt’s Oakland campus is dynamic; many opportunities to grow personally, academically and professionally are available right on campus, as well as in the city of Pittsburgh itself which is less than 10 minutes away, and in new and growing areas south and north of the city.
Involvement in the Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) and Department of Epidemiology communities
Both GSPH and the department provide students with venues to build social and professional networks with colleagues and faculty. The department holds informal weekly events for students, faculty and staff to talk over drinks and snacks. Other events are announced periodically throughout the academic year.
The department also welcomes student participation on academic committees and in groups charged with continuous improvement of operations, communication, curriculum, and student-faculty relationships. A variety of
student organization membership and leadership opportunities are also available to all students.
International students
Staff and faculty work together to ensure international applicants and students are aware of the many resources that are available to them to help ease transitions and create foundations for success.
The Office of International Services (OIS) supports and complements the academic mission of the University by providing the services and programs necessary to facilitate international education in its broadest sense, particularly in the areas of international admissions, immigration services, and international social and cultural programming. International students are encouraged to
contact OIS staff for information and assistance.
We listen to you
GSPH and the Department of Epidemiology faculty and staff place great emphasis on listening to student suggestions and requests; they are often incorporated when policies are planned or updated. To further ensure that our policies and operations reflect consideration of the opinions and ideas of our new and current students as well as our graduates, we conduct online surveys and carefully analyze and communicate the results.
