Center for Aging and Population Health (CAPH)

The Center for Aging and Population Health strives to generate new solutions to the challenges of an aging society through the conduct of population-based research that promotes healthy aging, longevity, and prevention of disability. Building on the resources of the University of Pittsburgh’s department of Epidemiology, the CAPH orchestrates epidemiologic and public health research on aging, train professionals in population research methodology, and conduct community outreach. These efforts are collaborative within the University and the community and engage older adults as valued resources in society. Thus, the focus of the CAPH is to optimize health in older adults by emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention.

Center for Healthy Aging

The Center for Healthy Aging (CHA), established in September 2001, is a Prevention Research Center funded by the CDC. CHA is housed within the CAPH. The mission of CHA is to promote healthy lifestyles and disease prevention in the older adult population through education, research, and public service. The CHA has worked closely with the community and health care professionals locally, statewide, and nationally over the past several years promoting the “10 Keys”™ to Healthy Aging, a public health campaign. The “10 Keys”™ program targets the most significant causes of disease and disability in adults that could be greatly reduced, postponed or eliminated if preventative efforts are adopted.

Center for Minority Health

The Center for Minority Health (CMH) was established in 1994, with a generous grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation. The CMH is the lead entity within the Schools of the Health Sciences to coordinate the academic/research and service activities of members of the faculty and students who deal with issues of relevance to minority health.

Epidemiology Data Center

The Epidemiology Data Center (EDC) was established in 1980 as a section of the Department of Epidemiology in the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh. The EDC has been involved in more than 100 research studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and other agencies. Presently the EDC coordinates data management and analysis activities for 33 research projects sponsored by federal agencies as well as industry.

Supercourse

Supercourse is a global repository of lectures on public health and prevention targeting educators across the world. Supercourse has a network of over 43435 scientists in 175 countries who are sharing for free a library of 3356 lectures in 26 languages. The concept of the Supercourse and its lecture style has been described as the Global Health Network University and the Hypertext Comic Books.

UPCI Center for Environmental Oncology

The Center for Environmental Oncology promotes further research on these environmental causes of cancer and through its outreach program educates the public about what environmental health experts and researchers already know. Given enough knowledge and the ability to make changes, individuals can avoid certain known cancer-causing agents or carcinogens in their daily lives and consequently lower their personal risks of getting cancer during their lifetimes.
