TIPS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS: TRANSITIONING FROM CONSUMERS TO PRODUCERS OF KNOWLEDGE
The faculty and staff of the Department of Epidemiology have enjoyed getting to know new students in September, as well as catching up with continuing students.

A number of faculty, students and the Student Services staff gathered at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association on September 11 for our annual Student Reception to kick off the 2009-2010 academic year, and took the opportunity to chat with friends and meet new colleagues. The weekly Epidemiology seminar series/teas and the faculty and student beer/pop parties have begun, providing other forums for social and academic networking.

SPRING 2009 EPIDEMIOLOGY STUDENT SURVEY SUMMARY
The Student-Faculty Liaison Committee and the Student Services staff thank all students who participated in this online survey.

Watch for announcements concerning future surveys. Responses received help the department gauge student satisfaction, promote communication and initiate proposals for improvements. Take part, and make your voice heard!



MPH INTERNSHIPS
All faculty, staff and students are invited to the Epi in Action! Symposium, to be held October 8th at noon. An introduction will be held for new students in the Epi Seminar, and the poster presentations will begin in the Common Lounge, running until 1:30. read more »



GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCHER (GSR) FORMS
Those doctoral program students with Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) positions in fall and spring terms should have met with their GSR supervisors to discuss their objectives for the term and specify them on a GSR Objectives Form, which can be downloaded from the departmental website. Forms should be submitted to the Student Services Offices (A536 or A537 Crabtree) for departmental retention. If you have not met with your supervisor for this purpose, please do so as soon as possible.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMPREHENSIBILITY EXAMS
All PhD or DrPH students who are non-native speakers of English must take the English Language Comprehensibility Exam administered by the University, to demonstrate proficiency in English prior to fulfilling their required teaching assistant experience in EPIDEM 2215 (Teaching Practicum).

The exam will be administered in December, and any student who has not yet taken it should plan to do so. More information concerning test dates and exam registration will be forwarded later in fall term.



JOURNAL CLUBS
Access the departmental website for information about continuing and new journal clubs. Join your colleagues and the faculty, and delve deeper into the literature and research of interest to you.

GRADUATION UPDATE
Paper graduation packets are no longer available in GSPH Student Affairs. Most information is now available electronically via the GSPH website. Contact Joanne Pegher, GSPH Graduation Coordinator, (jpegher@pitt.edu) with questions.



DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIPS
A number of students submitted scholarship applications by the September 25 deadline. All students will receive an e-mail response concerning the status of their applications when the review process has been completed.



STUDENT PERSPECTIVES
This section of the newsletter provides a forum for students to share their experiences, benefit from the perspectives of their colleagues and invite ongoing dialog on subjects affecting student life.

Rachel Bailey, an Epidemiology student who recently completed her MPH in the department, volunteered to present an overview of her experiences involving modeling of public health problems.
