General Description
Dr. McDonald is an assistant professor of epidemiology and interim director of the Global Health Program in the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and a clinical instructor in psychiatry in the School of Medicine. In her administrative capacity as associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, health sciences, at the University of Pittsburgh, she coordinates the development and support of academic and public affairs initiatives within the health sciences schools and between the health sciences and other University units, promotes and implements health-related collaborative relationships with academic institutions in other countries, and provides expert support to University executive staff (senior vice chancellor for the health sciences, provost, chancellor).
Dr. McDonald is director and "dean" of the University of Pittsburgh's highly popular Mini-Medical School program, now in its seventh year. This program, a series of evening lectures on current health care issues, the best available treatments, and the role of research in advancing modern medicine, routinely attracts 500 registrants annually. She is also the organizer of the University's annual campus-wide celebration of science. Over the course of two days, this event brings together more than 1,500 scientists and others interested in science to showcase important and innovative research under way in Pittsburgh, to promote the potential of this research for regional economic development, to foster collaboration among local scientists, and to demonstrate for the public how exciting science can be.
From 1971 to 1980, Dr. McDonald was a reporter for
Psychiatric News, the bimonthly newspaper of the American Psychiatric Association in Washington, D.C. In 1981, Dr. McDonald became director of publications for the National Association of Private Psychiatric Hospitals in Washington, D.C., a position she held until being recruited to the University of Pittsburgh in 1983. Dr. McDonald has held a number of positions of increasing responsibility at Pitt and, from October 1995 through January 1997, served as interim vice chancellor for institutional advancement, taking responsibility for Pitt's comprehensive programs related to university relations, fund-raising, and alumni affairs.
Dr. McDonald has served as a consultant to the National Institute of Mental Health, the MacArthur Foundation Network on the Psychobiology of Depression, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, Time-Life Books, the American Psychiatric Association, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the State of North Carolina, among others.
