As a physical activity epidemiologist, I have been actively involved in diabetes and other chronic diseases research for over 25 years and have extensive experience with many NIH single site and multi-site efforts in the areas of both physical activity assessment and behavioral lifestyle intervention. Examples of some of these NIDDK studies include the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and the DPP Outcomes Study, STOPP- T2d TODAY trial, and diabetes efforts involving Native Americans and other diverse groups. Single site efforts I have been, or continue to be, involved with include clinical trials focusing on women and health outcomes, lifestyle and vascular stiffness in young adults, and studies investigating diabetes risk factors and prevention/lifestyle intervention efforts in minority/underserved populations and developing countries. It is this diversity of my research experiences, the sheer number of brilliant colleagues that I had the opportunity to learn from, and my great appreciation of the uniqueness of each diverse community that has allowed me to transition so smoothly into translation research. I am currently funded by NIDDK to continue translating the DPP's successful behavioral intervention into diverse community settings as an extension of the work that I do through the Diabetes Prevention Support Center of the University of Pittsburgh.
